Trillian and Rendezvous
This article will be focused on rendezvous. We understand our Trillian messenger
but how
does rendezvous fit in? Why is it important? What can I do with it?
First of all, Rendezvous is a Zero Configuration Technology invented by Apple.
To reduce confusion, Apple has renamed rendezvous to Bonjour. It appears that TIBCO
sued Apple for trademark infringement regarding the Rendezvous moniker.
Bonjour provides you will the ability to allow for automatic discovery of clients
on a local network without the need for any sort of special servers like a DHCP
server.
Bonjour is open source so developers can add it to their applications if they wish.
Apple has developed Bonjour for Windows, primarily for printer sharing and the AirPort
Express. It also includes an Internet Explorer plugin to enable HTTP over Bonjour.
In summary, Bonjour or Rendezvous gives an device on a network the ability to assign
its own ip address and communicate with other devices on the local network without
the need of DHCP. Once the device is ready, Trillian can poll the network for other
Trillian messengers that a ready to communicate.
